Georgina Hoare

I'm an experienced Psychodynamic Counsellor/Psychotherapist, Music therapist, Clinical Supervisor and Organisational consultant based in Wimbledon. I now work predominantly with adult individuals. I'm registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) and Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I'm also registered and accredited by the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). Over the last twenty years I've worked as a Therapist in a variety of settings, NHS (learning disability, mental health and forensic services), education (primary and secondary schools) and the voluntary sector.

How I work

All of us have times in our lives when we are struggling to cope and it can really help to speak to someone who is outside of your close network of friends and family. We live in a world which can feel very fast paced and having space for yourself to reflect in a safe environment can be a really valuable experience, to feel listened to, to be heard and to be understood. I work Psychodynamically, which can sometimes also be described as a relational approach. What this means is that I'm both interested in understanding what is happening in the present for you and also thinking about whether there may be patterns from your past, which impact your thoughts or your behaviour which are getting in the way of you living an enjoyable life. Sometimes these patterns can get repeated in our therapeutic relationship and it can be a safe place to explore the meaning of this together.

How I can help

I'm experienced working with people with a range of difficulties including; depression (including post-natal depression), stress and anxiety, trauma and abuse, difficulties in relationships, long term health conditions, bereavement, fertility and sexuality difficulties.

I'm interested in thinking about the impact of significant life transitions such as becoming parents, parenting difficulties, bereavement including miscarriages and abortion, returning to work, career decisions, retirement, moving house, marriage and separation or divorce. I also support people with significant trauma such as experiences of domestic violence or sexual abuse, for men, women and the LGBT community.

Sometimes you may already have a formal diagnosis such as depression or anxiety or at other times you just not feel quite right, not feel happy with your life and want some space to explore this further. Typically I would see you weekly at the same time each week for 50 minutes, but at times I also provide twice weekly therapy too.

I understand that starting therapy is a big undertaking and I usually suggest that we have a few sessions to see if we both feel that it's a good fit and that we can work together.

I am also currently the Head of Talking Therapies at Wimbledon Guild and formerly the Director of Clinical Services at SurvivorsUK working with men who have experienced sexual violence.
